Cisterns were used to store a supply of water in case besieging armies diverted or poisoned the streams bringing water to the city. This was Istanbul's biggest one. It is under a very plain paved square, and entered through a small and unimpressive kiosk. Once inside, there is a big staircase leading to this huge dark room with 336 marble columns. Fish were swimming in the water below.
